Melpomene: Greek Muse of song and tragedy
Melpomene, the Greek muse of song and dance, evolved into the muse of tragedy due to cultural changes. (Source) Now considered both the muse of song and tragedy, my blog is named after her. Here I want to connect songs to human struggle, specifically when speakers of the lyrics seem shackled in their psyche.
This blog highlights how mental health issues are expressed in modern popular music. Here I will analyze the pieces and connect the songs to the mental health issues presented or implied by the songs. Some songs may be a reach, but that’s what I like about picking apart works of art. An interpretation of a small detail in a work of art can sometimes completely change the meaning of a piece. On this blog I will be analyzing any and all elements of songs that are meaningful, whether it be lyrics, form, meter and rhythm, timbre and texture, or harmony.
Who is this blog intended for?
I made this blog for a final project in my music theory class. This blog will have some jargon about music analysis so it will probably cater best to someone who has some experience in music theory and analysis. That said, I will be analyzing music you may already know and love, and I want to try and make my posts as accessible to newcomers as possible. (There will also be some informative posts on the different types of analysis I will be using.) So if you’re interested in understanding some of your favorite songs, albums, and artists on a deeper musical level, you are more than welcome here regardless of your experiences.
